A separate Peace

A Separate Peace Essay A Separate Peace is a coming of age novel in which a young man, Gene, tells his memories of his final years in adolescence with his best friend Finny at a private boarding school during the peak of World War II. Throughout this novel I was drawn towards the characters, and the flattery of my comprehension of the feelings felt by these diverse young people. The book was an easy read considering that it was more interesting in the beginning than in the end. Once inside the story I thought it only fair to finish it out. What I liked most was the portrayal of the character Finny. I found myself to have much in common with him, and similar triumphs and views that he had. I also like reading the mind of Gene, and understanding his train of thought, and also realizing his character; rather than just listening to what he said in dialogue. The author clearly had a good understanding of the way young knowledge yearning minds work. However, I did not enjoy the end of this book. I thought the death of Finny to be almost pointless, and although well written- somewhat unrealistic; meant solely for entertainment purposes. The theme of the war did not clearly show up until after his death when Gene felt obligated to enlist. Not only enlist- but enlist as a smart coward whose only goal is to live... to grow up in the war and die and old fat man. In that generation? It seems like he has lost his happiness and hope, and his drive- not to mention his couth.
