In the story “A lesson before dying”, the author - Earnest J. Gaines – develops the theme of discrimination against colored people throughout first five chapters. First, it is presented in the Jefferson’s trial. The judge, the prosecutor, the defense, and others members of the jury, who judge Jefferson - a black man, are white. To improve Jefferson’s innocent, his lawyer argues that Jefferson is not a man, and he calls Jefferson “a boy and a fool” or “a hog” because he is a black man.
