When Ralph is encountered in chapter one, he is idealistic saying that, “this is a good island”, repetitively, and never saying it is bad in any way, so showing that he is perhaps honest at this stage in believing that they will be rescued and taken to safety.
Then you study Ralph at this stage however, you see that he is confused in his thoughts, although he shouts, “No grown-ups! ...
Ralph is later elected as chief. ... ” The boys voted as a game – none taking it seriously, no information was given by Ralph as a candidate – although Jack stated why he should me chief and was ignored.
Ralph immediately tries to please, seeing Jacks “freckles disappear under a blush of mortification.” Ralph tries to apologise for winning the election by giving jack the choir back saying that they can be the hunters – already showing his weakness for popularity.
Ralph’s next action is to organise an expedition to find out if they really are on an island. ... Piggy tries to join them but the following argument occurs:
“I’ll come”
Ralph turned to him. ... ”
We see here that Ralph is trying to dismiss his first friend on the island – perhaps because he is scared that it might come out that although Ralph is getting all the glory for his actions, it was actually Piggy that came up with them.
At the meeting in Chapter two, Ralph is trying to show he is a good leader – whilst still being idealistic about the island. ...
Ralph tries to think about leadership of the boys. Being chief is beginning to mean he has to act like a chief! ... Recall how playfully Ralph took on the role; it was all a game then, but now he thinks "the meeting must not be fun, but business.
