The Apology and the Crito relate the philosophical story of Socrates. ... In the Apology, Socrates exclaims that if the jury decides to forbid him from ever practicing philosophy again, then he will disobey that order. On the contrary, Socrates states in the Crito, that he must abide by the laws of Athens, and choose not to escape from prison. ...
In the Apology, Socrates reveals that his purpose is to become a gadfly to Athens. ... “But the truth”, says Socrates in the Apology, “is that God only is wise; and by his answer he intends to show that the wisdom of men is worth little or nothing. ... In the Crito, Socrates appears to completely contradict his prior argument from the Apology. ... Socrates’ friend Crito desperately attempts to convince Socrates to escape from his prison. Crito argues that he is able to help Socrates escape: that the escape would not be too difficult for Socrates: that his friends all have the necessary funds to achieve it: and that his friends are willing to incur the risk. Crito has also arranged a safe place for Socrates to stay in Thessaly. If Socrates decides not to escape, Crito argues that he will be abandoning his family. Finally, Crito argues that by not escaping, Socrates is allowing his enemies to defeat him; that it is an injustice. Reflecting on Crito’s arguments brings about a difficult situation. ... In other words, the argument between Socrates and Crito is not whether or not Socrates should escape, but whether it would be the virtuous thing for Socrates to escape. ... In the Apology, Socrates stated that he was unafraid of death because to claim that he was afraid of the afterlife would be claiming that he had some notion of what the afterlife was like. ... It is clear from the Apology, that Socrates believes that sometimes it is necessary to go against the law and even in this rebellion may maintain their virtue.
