Ambiguity in Turn of the Screw
|

|
In the book The Turn of the Screw, Henry James applies the use of vague dictions to further enhance the ambiguity in the readers?mind, when Miles says, ?‘I’ll tell you everything?Miles said—‘I mean I’ll tell you anything you like ?but not now??(98). This is described in the previous text by the governess of a “perverse horror ... [towards my] act of violence [to Miles]?(98), which could be seen in two different ways. James illustrates two aspects, one where the governess is portrayed as a mentally unstable and evil being. The other aspect when interpreting it as a gothic novel, where there are actual apparitions of Peter Quint that cause the conflict between good and evil. When viewing the passage as a psychological thriller, the governess is mentally unstable due to the power struggle between Miles and the governess. As a result, “everything?refers to the justifications the governess desires to prove to the people throughout Bly that she is not insane.
