Patricia McKissack did a wonderful job explaining how children can become friends do to excruciating circumstances they are put through. Within the pages of this book, an African-American girl tells a story about how her family took in an Apache boy because he was being taken to an internment camp. At first, the girl keeps the boy a secret from her parents, but when she decides to tell them; she regrets her decision. The family, as well as the pets, start treating the boy as one of their own and that becomes a problem for the girl, Sarah. Although when her family comes under attack by a white supremacist group called Knights of the Southern Order, Sarah is happy that Sky (the Apache boy) is there to help her family and get rid of the Knights.
