SYMBOLS IN ASP WAR - The war symbolizes the real world (reality). The boys try to exclude themselves from this. The war also symbolizes the war going on inside Gene. Finny fails to recognize either one of these wars because he cannot face reality. He cannot accept the harshness in reality. He cannot accept or admit to the “savageness” inside his best friend. Finally, he does accept both of the wars, but because of this, he cannot live in the “real” world. Two Rivers 1. Devon- It is preferred by the boys (because they do not want to face reality).
