A Separate Peace 4. Symbols: Rivers, Seasons, and the Devon woods/tree Rivers- Devon river is pure is pure and clean; where Gene had the most fun over the summer. Naguamsett River is filthy and dirty which Gene thinks he should have been baptized in because of his wrong doings. He thinks he is unclean and contaminated with evil after pushing Finny and hitting Quakenbush. Seasons- Summer is where Gene has all his fun and he still has his boyhood. Literally summer is a time of relaxing and just having fun. In the winter, the snow hides all of Gene’s problems and hides all the answers to the accidents. He doesn’t want anyone to know about them and his worst fear is people hearing about the truth.
