Bifocalism in Lord of the Flies
One interesting idea that occurs throughout LOTF is the importance of bifocalism. We must see twice to see things true. If you look at things from only one perspective, you will not get a true picture of what they are. If you look at them from two perspectives, you will have a much, much better idea. Life is binary, duplex; and this is one of the reasons why Simon is such a positive figure in LOTF, the one shaft of light in an otherwise really dark text. Even on Beelzebub’s island, among sadists and savages, Simon can still see the doubleness of man. When he thinks of the human being, it is of a creature at once heroic and sick.
