Critical Essay – Lord of the Flies

|
The beast alone is a powerful and rich symbol, and is of great significance in the novel. The beast takes various forms, some physical and some metaphorical. The main physical form of beast could be seen as the parachutist. This parachutist was in fact the pilot of the aeroplane, whose parachute had become entangled and stretched over a fairly large area. The kneeling figure of the pilot was present at its front. This resulted in what appeared to be a beast-like form. This beast was made to seem particularly realistic when the wind blew; this caused the parachute to fill with air and the frontal figure of the pilot to move up and down. From the omniscient view of the reader, this is all known from very early on. However, the boys, particularly the littluns (younger boys), are ready to believe that what they see is in fact a kind of beast. When the issue of the beast is first raised at an assembly, the existence of the beast is firmly believed by a group of littluns.
