Choosing a Novel

"But first, a novel has to entertain--that's the contract with the reader: you give me ten hours and I'll give you a reason to turn every page.” - Barbara Kingsolver Choosing a book for novel study is a very important task. It can determine if you enjoy class for a month or dread it. If you have the wrong book, it can turn reading into a nightmare. When I decide on a book to read there are two important standards: writing and interest. Anyone can publish a book, it seems, so I find it very important to read a couple of pages within the book to get a feel for the writer’s style. I don’t enjoy writing that over complicates speech or description. I only need a general feel for the surroundings, not that there were 25, light green, oak leaves, gently blowing in the strong and constant wind. The problem with bad writing is that no matter how interesting the subject, it’s not enjoyable to read. The great thing about required reading lists is, generally, all the books are written well. It’s nice to have someone else pick though the mountain of fiction writers and find 3 or 4 good ones. All the authors on the list are good writers; consequently the only measure I’m left with is interest. It’s hard to take into account all the things that make up an interesting story. Of course, genre is important, (I personally wouldn’t pick up a science fiction book) and setting (After Moby Dick, I don’t think I could read another boat story), but after that, without actually reading the story, it’s hard to pinpoint why I would choose one book over another.
