Barrytown, a working class district in the north of Dublin, is the setting of Doyle’s novel ‘The Commitments’. The story contains four phases ‘The Commitments’ go through:
· The forming phase
· The rehearsal phase
· The stage phase
· The decomposition phase
a) The forming phase
Outspan Foster and Derek Scully, members of a three day old group called ‘And And! ... And’ to ‘The Commitments’ and fires the third band member Ray because the new band doesn’t need a synth player. ... ’
A band - ‘The Commitments’ - is formed:
Jimmy Rabbitte: manager
Joey The Lips: trumpet
Outspan Foster: guitar
Derek Scully: bass
Deco Cuffee: vocals
Dean Fay: saxophone
Billy Mooney: drums

b) The rehearsal phase
