Short story authors use symbols and metaphors in short fiction to address a larger problem. Three authors, that are prime examples of this writing style are: Willa Carther, who wrote “ Paul’s Case”, Ted Poston, who wrote “ The Revolt of the Evil Fairies”; and Flannery O’Connor, who wrote “Greenleaf”. All of these authors use symbolism, and metaphors to address a larger problem, rather then to directly focus on it.
In the short story “Paul’s Case”, by Willa Carther, the main character, paul never knew his mother. ...
A color in a story is always a symbol. ... This color symbol foreshadows the story, for every flower must die and as the reader reads the story he/she realizes that soon the flower would die and something bad would happen to Paul. This symbol could also be perceived as a plot device, this is because it keeps the story going.
