Kate Chopin’s The Awakening and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary have nearly identical subject matter, but are narrated in contrasting ways. The tones of these novels are what make them different. Chopin uses the style of impressionism, while Flaubert uses naturalism. In The Awakening, Chopin’s writing makes the reader feel sympathy for Edna. In Madame Bovary, Flaubert writes in a way that condemns his protagonist, Emma Bovary. Both authors use the themes of marital dissatisfaction, fate, and suicide. Although the authors use fate differently, they both view it as oppression towards their characters. The way their suicides were committed parallels the way they lived their lives. One of Edna and Emma’s biggest problems was their husbands. The problems with their marriages caused depression, helping to lead to their death.
