Dramatic Irony in Oedipus the King
Dramatic irony is defined as a special kind of suspenseful expectation, when a character says or does something that he or she does not know is going to be fulfilled at the end of the play. The play Oedipus the King is flowing with dramatic irony. Dramatic irony contributes to the play in many ways such as allowing the characters to reveal that Oedipus was cursed, foreshadowing the prophecy, and the way Oedipus speaks ill about the “murderer,” when it is actually he who is to blame, and his overwhelming sense of pity for himself when he finds out the truth.
Many characters in the play unveil that Oedipus is bound to create a following of evil. Oedipus was considered unacceptable according to his mother and father, King Laios and Jocaste. ... Oedipus later became the loved King of Thebes who unknowingly married his mother and ruled with a caring heart and an indomitable mind set.
