Divya Thota. English: 2341(MW) Paper I: Devil in a Blue Dress. Devil in a Blue Dress, directed by Carl Franklin, is a carefully etched narrative from a black veteran’s perspective. This entirely imaginary work centers on a round character, Easy Rawlins, a World War II veteran played by Denzel Washington. He “well understands the psychology and appeal of Easy Rawlins, a black man painfully squeezed by every conceivable power relation and economic circumstance”(Guerrero-40). “As a private eye, Rawlins is made, not born” (Ebert-2). Easy, who wants to live an American dream, is reluctantly dragged into the morbid world of criminality wherein he compromises his values and integrity to realize his dream. Easy wants to live an American dream in spite of his socio-economic vulnerability of being a black in a white dominated society. His dream receives a jolt when he loses his job, his only income for mortgage payments, solely on a white boss’ racial prejudice.
