ROR – The Catcher in the Rye 1. The Catcher in the Rye 2. J.D. Salinger, published – July 1951 3. Jerome David Salinger was born in New York City in 1919. In his early childhood he went to many different prep schools in Manhattan, until his parents moved him to the Valley Forge Military Academy in 1934, where he graduated in 1936. Salinger went to many colleges, including Columbia University, but did not graduate from any of them. Salinger took a creative writing class While at Columbia, and excelled highly. Salinger joined the army and wrote stories while fighting in Europe during World War II. When he returned from the war he continued to write more stories, publishing them in many popular magazines. In 1951, Salinger published his only full-length novel, The Catcher in the Rye. Many events in Salinger’s early life appeared in his novel. For example, The main character, Holden Caulfield, moves from prep school to prep school, is threatened with military school, and knows a student from Columbia. After this huge success, Salinger began to publish less and less. After his last short story in 1965, he withdrew completely from public life. 4. -Holden Caulfield – The main character, and narrator of the novel. He is a sixteen-year-old junior, who was expelled from Pencey Prep. because of academic failure. Holden is very pessimistic, and negative in his attitude towards everything. He criticizes everyone and everything that he comes in contact with, and is very easily annoyed by the slightest things. -Ackley – Holden’s next-door neighbor in his dorm at Pencey Prep. Ackley is an insecure boy who is one year older than Holden. He often walks into Holden’s room and touches and messes with everything in their room just to annoy Holden. -Stradlater – Holden’s roommate at Pencey Prep.
