As Jim begins his stay at Lunghua Camp he begins to learn the most important skill required for his survival that is that loyalty is to oneself alone. Believing this Jim puts himself in front of others and also in front of the relationships he has formed at the camp. Because of this loyalty to ones self-Jim constantly keeps himself occupied to help his survival. For example he does odd chores for Bassie in return for food.--- It was important to keep in with Bassie who had small but reliable sources of food.--- He also helps Dr.Ransome with the garden at the hospital again with the reward being extra food and even does chores for the Americans. This constant activity and work for Jim not only helps with his personal survival but helps him to deal with the horrors of the camp around him. It keeps him in a fit mental and emotional state unlike most of the other prisoners. Jim does not shut out the reality of the camp like the other prisoners but is prepared to take notice and to adjust himself to it.
