In the play “King Lear” appearance vs. reality is present throughout every character. In the beginning King Lear appears to be a man who does not like being contradicted or having his authority challenged. King Lear was used to having absolute power, and being flattered by everyone around him. In the first Act of the play King Lear prioritizes the appearance of love over the reality of loyalty, truth and responsibility. ... King Lear asks his daughters “which of you shall we say doth love us most? ... Goneril appears to be a loving, caring, loyal daughter when she answers Lear’s question, describing her love for him as “dearer than eyesight, space, and liberty / beyond what can be valued, rich or rare”(I, i. ... “It is obvious that she loves her father, but she cant express it the way in which Lear wants her to. ... The King even refers to her as, "Unfriended, new adopted to our hate, dowred with our curse, and strangered with our oath. ... “
Only Kent and the King of France could see beyond the appearance that was created in this scene to the reality of who Cordelia is and what she is truly like.
