In the beginning of the novel, Ellen is living with her biological parents. ... He treated Ellen and her mother less than dirt. The opening of the novel is Ellen saying this, “When I was little I would think of ways to kill my dady. ... ” Ellen’s mother was not the greatest person either. ... Ellen’s mother ended up killing herself a little later in the novel. This really made it much harder for Ellen to survive because with her mother out of the way, Ellen’s father abused her even more than before. It was a gift from god when Ellen’s teacher saw the brews on her arm in school and did something about it.
After Ellen’s teacher took care of her father and got her out of the house, the young girl moved into her art teacher, Julia’s house.
