Although his life looks harsh from the outside, Little Tree believed that he was living fairly well and that he had it better than most children did at his age. ... Wine, taught him how to “figure” numbers, while his Grandma had Little Tree learn five words from the dictionary a week. Little Tree was also taught the whisky trade by his Grandpa, from which he received half of the profit. Little Tree enjoyed his life in the mountains, but when the law came around and took Little Tree away from his grandparents, that all changed. They put Little Tree in an orphanage where he was mistreated because of his Cherokee heritage. Eventually, though, his grandfather took Little Tree back home. ...
The story begins to wrap up after Little Tree’s grandfather brings him home, and they begin to spend even more time together than they had before. ... Little Tree and his Grandfather usually went for walks together in the woods, but now Grandma would come along as well. ... Now, when he and his Grandfather would deliver whiskey, Little Tree would carry the heavier loads.
