One of the most anthologized stories ever written, The Father by Bjornstjerne Bjornson is a clear Christian statement addressing the problem of man’s futile efforts to give value to valueless ideologies of pride and power, at the same time, showing how our Father, God, continuously and carefully watches over us and willingly and patiently sows seeds of love within our hearts, waters them everyday, and finally, allows them to grow and bear fruit in the form of positive transformation on our part. ... Like the Bible, The Father uses numbers, which variably may either connote secular completeness, adolescence, or even the Catholic doctrine of The Trinity. ... Riding that train of thought, we could designate Thord as God The Father, being the ultimate provider in the story, Finn, as God The Son, being the sacrifice, and at the same time instrument of transformation on Thord’s part, thereby, in the end, Thord somewhat ‘blessed’ the ‘people’ by giving them his riches and wealth, and lastly, the priest, who stands as God the Holy Spirit, who in the course of the story, provided guidance and tried to redirect Thord’s life, and, conclusively, being the priest in the community, guiding the people towards righteousness was his primary respinsibility.
