A Farewell to All That
The Great War remains one of the most senseless wars in history. ... Trying to make sense of all the carnage spawned many literary works of fiction and non-fiction. Two works in particular are Ernest Hemingway’s, A Farewell To Arms and the autobiography of Robert Graves, A Goodbye to All That. ... Although Hemingway’s book is a fictional story, it uses a premise that is quite similar to his own real life story and is rumored to be a romanticized autobiographical account of his time as an ambulance driver on the Italian front. ... We all watched him
sympathetically for weeks after, expecting him to die of grief, or turn black in the face, or do something
to match the occasion. ... little pieces of shell-casing came buzzing down all around. ... There are of course adults that still have strong faith, but according to the accounts given by both Hemingway and Graves of themselves and their comrades, the Great War seems to have brought the question of the existence of God up for debate amongst its participants. As Graves concentrated more on the loss of innocence and normalcy, Hemingway had the protagonist of A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry represent the loss of faith in God, caused by elements of the war. ... At the start of the winter came the permanent rain and with the rain came the cholera. ... (Hemingway 4)
Clearly the priest represents the light regard given to religion as he is ridiculed in the earlier chapters of the book. However, both Hemingway and Graves point out the most important fact of The Great War and that is the complete and total absurdity of the war.
The futility of full frontal assaults on fixed positions without any kind of cover and the senseless meat grinding atmosphere of trench warfare are highlighted by both Graves and Hemingway.
