In the story “The Gentleman from San Francisco”, the author Ivan Bunin show us a part of society where egocentricity, hypocrisy and self-indulgence stand out in the entire story. Its amaizing how the three characteristics are combined in a single story in order to demostrate how empty and selfish a society could be.
Begining with the first line of the story: “The gentleman from San Francisco- nobody in either Naples or Capri could remember his name. ... This is a society where hypocrisy reign supreme. ... In the story even the people who live and work in the island and in the boat, only treated the Gentleman and his family nicely because they had money: “The Island of Capri was damp and dark that night. ... A crowd of those whose duty it was to give the gentleman from San francisco a fitting welcome, were already waiting at the top of the hill on the funicular platform. There were other arrivals, too, but they deserved no attention- a few Russians who had settled down in Capri, absent-minded and untidy men wearing spectacles and beards, the collars of their threadbare overcoats turned up; and a party of long-legged, round-shoulders, who were in need of no services from anyone and felt at home wherever they happened to be and were not at all generous with their money”.
