The "Good-Hearted" Grandmother
In " ‘ One of My Babies’: The Misfit and the Grandmother," Stephen Bandy traces the character of the grandmother to show that she is a selfish person. On the other hand, Flannery O’Connor emphasizes the grandmother as a grace-bringer and finds little to blame in the woman. ... Much criticism of the story appears to take the sentimental view of the grandmother largely because she is a grandmother. After reading the story and various criticism pertaining to the grandmother, she is in spite of it all a "good-hearted" person in my book. The concern for her family, her bravery, and Christ-like behaviors persuade readers more to the sentimental view that just because she is a grandmother.
A t the beginning of the story the grandmother was determined to take the family on vacation to Tennessee rather that Florida. This first view of the grandmother manipulates the reader to see selfishness is her. ... The grandmother’s concern was a warning for the family and it demonstrated foreshadowing; if Bailey would have given in to the grandmother’s demand, the family would have never seen the misfit. Throughout "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" the grandmother’s care about her family is very evident. Pursuing the accident, the grandmother stated " You wouldn’t shoot a lady would you" to the misfit. ... Looking deeper into the statement revealed the defensible reason for the grandmother’s remark. The grandmother’s main concern was her family. ... John Wesley and June Star were too young to experience their grandmother and parents being killed before their eyes. The worries about her family makes it clear that she is a "good-hearted" person. ... June Star and John Wesley’s grandmother loved them and she knew what was best for her family. ...
At the story’s beginning, the grandmother seems facetious, harmless, and gentle. After the encounter with misfit the grandmother’s gentleness is suddenly converted to bravery. ... This little old grandmother steps out of reality and boldly tells this criminal, who is probably twice her size, just escaped from prison, and capable of doing anything, that she knows who he is and what he is up to.
