Gender roles in M Butterfly
Although the entire play carries a theme of the establishment of gender roles, I believe David Henry Hwang attempts to express his views, clearly, on the place of men and women in society through specific scenes in, M. Butterfly. ... It reverses the roles, making Gallimard, who we thought was the dominant character, passive.
Although the ideal of such a male dominated relationship is the status quo in many places, Hwang signifies that it is time for a change through the way he defines the gender roles of Song and Gallimard in his play.
