I've just been looking over some of the crap I wrote about high school when I was 18. In the middle of all this garbage was a photograph of myself at that age, and I realized that I really was at my best back then. I was in college at the time, and all the knowledge learned back then was much closer at hand than it is now. I was better looking and in better shape. I was more creative in every way imaginable. So why did my writing suck so much? People raved about it, and I got good grades all the way through college. Sure, I questioned the adulation at the time, but I thought it was because everyone else was too stupid to understand. I never questioned my own ability. (While I would give anything to go back in time, I would only do it if I could take what I know now. Factual knowledge, back then, was very accurate. I just had no idea how to _feel_ about any of it.) I think that I was too wrapped up in my own petty worries.
