How Symbolism is Represented in Lord of the Flies

When reading William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, one comes across many themes, ideas and many situations where symbolism is used. A technique that authors use in assigning particular items or people with underlying issues so that they do not only stand just for themselves, symbolism provokes us to see how certain things represent something more than just their face value. ... The symbolism that Golding illustrates is important in developing his storyline for Lord of the Flies. There are many different representations of symbolism in the novel including the conch shell, the beast, and the Lord of the Flies itself. ... In his mind, Simon sees the voice belonging to Beelzebub, which translates to Lord of the Flies. ... ’ ” (Golding, 142)

The Lord of the Flies becomes a physical beast, a source of revealing the beast that resides within each boy, and a symbol of the power evil that humans are capable of succumbing to, and having in their lives.
