Humor in the catbird seat

Everyone knows an “Erwin Martin”; the anal, meticulous, straight edge, mousey little man whose whole life is his miserable 9 to 5. At first glance, one would not think a character like this would not be the first choice for a comedy. However, many forget that satire is what can make a story hilariously comical. Any good comic writer knows this is the key to a good laugh; a good caricature. Thurber uses this exaggeration of features or mannerisms of people for a satirical, comedic effect not only in his writing but in his famed comic strips as well. Mr. Erwin Martin is the epitome of this. Perhaps because he mastered humor, Thurber could characterize seemingly “unfunny” figures such as Mr. Martin, Mrs. Barrows, and even Mr. Fitweiler in his satirical, hilarious short story. Mr. Martin is the conventional 1940’s worker who is always scrupulous, consistent, and very efficient at his work as the head of the filing department at F&S. He never smokes, nor drinks and his work is always on time and flawless.
