Names are one of, if not the most important themes in the novel How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents. ... Yolanda assigns different connotations for each of her nicknames, but these nicknames are not as meaningful as her birth given name, which she insists on being called when she is feeling insecure. ... Each represents a different part of Yolanda’s individuality: “Yolanda nicknamed Yo in Spanish, misunderstood as Joe in English, doubled and pronounced like the toy Yoyo –or when forced to select from a rack of personalized key chains, Joey-…” (68) Her name “Yo” is just a shortened version of her original name. She links both the name “Yolanda” and “Yo” to her native tongue. ... “Joe” is the anglicized version of her name. ... Because of this, she associates this name with America, unlike the name “Yo” which she associates with the Dominican Republic. ... From the word “force,” it seems that she would not use the name otherwise. ... ” This is displayed on page 61 where Yolanda and her older sister Carla get into a rift about Yolanda’s name: “‘Yolanda,’ Carla corrects her [Sofia]. ... That’s my name you know. ... At times like these, she insists on being called “my name,” (Yolanda) not an altered version.
