Killer Angels

The Killer Angels ‘The Killer Angels’ was written by Michael Shaara. Shaara was born in 1928, in New Jersey. He first started writing books about science fiction. After doing this for some years, he switched over to mainstream fiction, and many of his works were then published in magazines. On a visit to Gettysburg, Shaara got the idea to write a novel about the civil war. However, instead of inventing characters as many of his peers did, Shaara wanted to write the stories of real people who fought in the battle. Mainly in the book he uses Lee and Chamberlin, with other real people’s stories through out the novel. Shaara encountered his own share of problems when he wrote this book, however the most evident would have to be the historical accuracy that he had to include. Because he was using real people who actually fought in the battle, he most likely had to talk to dozens of historians, and scour many documents, just to get the facts write. But the end result turned out great, and the book had a tone that people were not use to, and that is what makes this novel one of the best written about the civil war. ‘The Killer Angels’ tells the story of the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 1, 1863, the two opposing armies, the Confederate army, and the Union army, fought the largest battle of the American Civil War. When the battle concluded, 50,000 men were dead, wounded, or missing.
