The novel "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez is about a boy, who becomes a man in the ghetto. About a man who gets caught up in being loyal to his friends, and loses sight of what is important to him. About a man who gets involved in the underground world of drugs, money and corruption by helping out a friend, and by living in Spanish Harlem. Much like Junot Diazs "Drown", "Bodega Dreams" is written with a streetwise attitude and a realism that can only be realized by the people who have lived a similar tale. ... That your well being depends on having a name for yourself. ...
The book becomes evermore interesting when we are introduced to the rest of the characters, Vera, Willie Bodega and Nazario. ... Willie Bodega, a kid from the block, always involved in political activism, now taking hold of Spanish Harlem with drug money but trying to use it for the good of the people, of course at a price, undying loyalty.
