Throughout history humanity has required leaders to retain order. A proficient leader can be defined as an intelligent, dominant and organized person. The novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, develops situations that create a need for leaders. Ralph, the diplomat, and Jack, the dictator, demonstrate important characteristics needed for leadership. The most significant quality shown by both Jack and Ralph is the ability to apply their intelligence. Their individual intelligence not only helps them lead but also aids them in the use of other characteristics such as the ability to exert control over others. Intelligence and control are useful in themselves, but when given purpose through proper organizational skills they become even more effective. Any leader may have intelligence, control and organizational skills, but a skilled leader must develop and use these talents at their zenith. Ralph uses his attributes to the best of his ability, however Jack cultivates his traits and uses these qualities to become the most effective leader on the island.
