Lord of the Flies Compare/Contrast Essay In the novel Lord of the Flies, the main characters Ralph and Jack are more different than similar. Ralph is a more affectionate and caring person, whereas Jack is more violent and harsh. They both however, share some similarities such as the need for leadership and control. Jack has more of this need than Ralph, since his “listen-to-no one” persona takes the best of him. Ralph and Jack, although different, do have some things in common. They both desire power and leadership over the group of children lost on the island. We use a quote from the novel as an example: “Who thinks Ralph oughtn’t to be chief?” says Jack. This quote can be found on page 139, after Jack, Ralph and Roger see the beast on top of the mountain.
