Elmer Rice's Adding Machine is, among other things, about technology and technophobia. This is a concept we intend to explore through the production by using various forms of multi-media. Since our production will use "multi media" it is important to explore a few recent and current examples. Through this exploration, we can further our understanding of "multi media" and how it might be useful to our production. Below I have found definitions of both "multi media" and "virtual reality". I have separated the two concepts in order to fully understand how virtual reality might be applicable in the theatre. However, "virtual reality" falls under the first definition of "multi media". Definition of “multi-media” mul·ti·me·di·a pl.n. (used with a sing. verb) 1. The combined use of several media, such as movies, slides, music, and lighting, especially for the purpose of education or entertainment. (This is the defintion we will most likely be using for the production) 2. The use of several mass media, such as television, radio, and print, especially for the purpose of advertising or publicity. Also called mixed media. 3. The combined use of media such as text, graphics, video, and sound, as on a computer system. Shows using multi-media General multi media · Mary’s Dream-“a visual, sonic and interactive feast for those ready for something different.” Employed large video walls, live digital camera feeds, lasers, heat sensing thermal cameras, surround sound, and audience volunteers · Monsters of Grace- a 68-minute show divided into 13 scenes that alternated between projected computer animation and staged vignettes q "Video-art" is a popular form of multi-media. This term is self-explanatory; it involves any use of video in a separate art form. One of the fathers of this new art form is Gary Hill. Hill started his career as a sculptor and then moved into the field of performance. According to an interview with George Quasha and Charles Stein in 1998, the first performance piece Hill ever did was when he recorded himself as he watched himself on a monitor. He then played that back and recorded himself interacting with the prerecorded image (Dasgupta et Marranca 361). This greatly intrigued him and "the sculpture [he] had been doing for several years seemed overwhelmingly tedious and distant from this present-tense process. Video allowed the possibility to 'think out loud,' as if with some 'other' self" (Dasgupta et Marranca 361). It is very possible "video-art" could play a role in the production of The Adding Machine. For instance one way to use "video-art" would be to demonstrate the main character's inability to think outside of the box.
