Macbeth

“Macbeth” is the story of ambition, deceit, and guilt. The story, written by William Shakespeare, is about the quest of Macbeth’s ambition to be king. Throughout the story, Macbeth’s ambition leads to the downfall and death of him and his wife. The main theme of “Macbeth” is the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints. This theme is shown throughout many other characters besides Macbeth. Macbeth’s unchecked ambition is similar to many other great leaders.
Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement. The story begins with three witches confronting Macbeth about the future. ... Baffled by this, Macbeth returns to King Duncan’s Castle where he finds that the first prophecy has come true. Seeing that the prophecy has come true, Macbeth and his wife form an evil plan to kill King Duncan so that Macbeth can overtake his thrown. ... To fulfill the prophecy, Macbeth must murder Banquo and his descendent, Fleance. Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance:
MACBETH: Both of you
Know Banquo was your enemy. ...
MACBETH: So is he mine; and in such bloody distance,
That every minute of his being thrusts
Against my nearst of life…. ... When Macbeth learns that Fleance has escaped he is paranoid and begins hallucinating. ...
MACBETH: Where? ...
MACBETH: Which of you have done this?
LORDS: What, MACBETH: Thou canst not say I did it: never shake 60
Thy gory locks at me. ... (Glencoe Literature, pages 312-313)
