Introduction
Chinua Achebe’s novel, A Man of the People, sets the stage for a subtle, political battlefield in a fictitious setting in a fictitious African country. ... The novel centres around an era when Africa had just gained independence from the controlling British white-man, when politics were in turmoil, as citizen did not know who to trust and who to turn to for leadership. ... The character of power in A Man of the People is Chief the Honourable M. ... The power of Nanga is felt in the way he is able to control his people, his charisma. ... ” Political issues were not so much played up in this era as were the personas of the people who felt they were best suited for the position of solving the country’s problems. ... Without the same admiration, Odili’s new political party was unable to develop the same powerful following of people, or take Nanga’s supporters from him. A Man of the People illustrates how the political power of an individual is often not solely based upon what the person stands for, but is strongly influenced by the ability of that person to be a popular, powerful, influence.
