The moral theme of great expectations is affection, loyalty and conscience and more important than social advancement, wealth, and class. In GE, pip learns this lesson by exploring ideas of ambition and self-improvement. It seems as if Pip is an idealist- he always seeks improvement. - Went to satis house, he longs to be a wealthy gentleman - Realize his moral wrongs, he longs to be good - Realizes he cant read, he learns how - He is always hard on himself when he acts immorally and always feels guilty: when he leaves for London, he torments himself about having been so rude toward Joe and biddy. - When magwitch first meets pip, pip is frightened because he is a convict and feels guilty for helping him and betraying the police.
