This novel was written at a time when Europe was emerging from the rigidity of the Enlightenment and neoclassical ideals and entering into the of bosom Romanticism and romantic ideals. ... This undoubtedly had some influence on Shelley as she shaped and molded the characters of Victor and “the monster“. Shelley cleverly arms each character with the virtues of each school of thought, while showing how an indulgence to either extreme would be cause for disaster. ... Frankenstein. ... But if we look closer we can see the groundwork being laid for our neoclassical hero‘s, Walton and Victor. ... Victor’s interests are in science and the specifics of nature, a virtue praised by the enlightenment and neoclassical thinking; the exact opposite of the Romantic ideal. ...
The monster and Clerval serve as our Romantic hero’s. ... If romanticism developed out of a need to improve upon the ideals of neoclassicism, then it can be argued that the monster developed to improve upon the creator. Consequently, if Victor’s creation was larger in stature, greater in strength and sharper in mind; similar is to be said of the Romantic era in elevation to the Enlightenment Era.
