This is possibly one of the lowest ways to gain control over someone; to teach them they are not loved by their own blood. ... Education was a huge threat to the slaveholders due to their fear of not knowing the intellect of their surrounding slaves. ... Because he was told he could not learn, he taught himself. ...
Freedom to not only speak for himself but to speak for the rest of the slaves from North to South; this was Douglass goal.
