On the Sidewalk Bleeding
“On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter is about a sixteen year old boy who has been stabbed by a member of a rival gang. The story is set in an alleyway in New York, with Andy (the main character) lying bleeding in the rain. ... Andy does not realise he is dying as he is lying on the sidewalk thinking, “that was a fierce rumble. ... Andy could not speak, and he is bubbling blood from his mouth, which conveys how serious his injuries are as we now know he is bleeding internally. ... As this story is set in America, the author uses American words to make the story more realistic, such as “sidewalk” and “cop.” The story opens very dramatically with a description of Andy lying bleeding.
