One infers that Odysseus is a defective hero due to his retched flaws, but in fact, his flaws make him a believable hero. ... ’ wary Odysseus countered, ‘cross that thought from your mind. ... I’m just a mortal man.” (Book 7, line 243) Odysseus is not the stereotypical hero because he is ordinary and his flaws cause him to succumb to temptation. Flaws such as disloyalty, petulance, and pride demonstrate that Odysseus is human, not a god. Odysseus’ flaws surface when he is tempted or when his goals are foiled. ... The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (1994) defines a hero as: “A man often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods. ... Odysseus’ character is different because he is flawed, making him a believable hero. Superman helps all the damsels in distress and appears to not have any personality flaws. ... He had no flaws. ... Due to his holy nature the common man can not identify with Jesus’ perfection, therefore, it is hard to create a common ground. Contrastingly, Odysseus is just an ordinary man, who did heroic acts, such as defeating the Trojans, outwitting Polyphemus, escaping Charybdis and Scylla, and creating a good reputation for his family.
