Prince and the Pauper

In Mark Twain’s historical fiction, The Prince and the Pauper, a pauper and a prince switch places, living in each other’s shoes. Edward, the prince, feels the wrath of King Henry VIII’s reign, while Tom Canty, the pauper, lives life up as a prince and king. ...
Tom Canty finally gets his wish of meeting the Prince of Wales, a true prince, in person. After an innocent clothing change between Tom and Prince Edward, Tom finds himself as the Prince of Wales and eventually the King of England. His first reaction is that he is scared of what will become of him when King Henry VIII finds out that he is not really the Prince, but “the meanest among his subjects, being pauper born.” Because of the clothes Tom is wearing, the finest clothes money could buy, the clothes the Prince wears, people just shrug off Tom’s remarks and think the Prince has had “a scurvy faintness” and “a passing fantasy”. His appearance suggests that he is the Prince of Wales; therefore people thought he was the almighty Prince.
