The odd but interesting city of Juba is one of the main settings of Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi/ historical fiction novel Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus.
Perhaps the historians living and working underground in the Pastwatch observatory enjoyed living in the past as much as they loved studying it. ... Juba’s culture probably doesn’t affect or influence their goals and decisions, but “living in the past” may help the Pastwatch historians put themselves “in the shoes” of the beings in the past that the historians observe.

The people of Pastwatch try to be good people. ... There are several protagonists in this novel, but the character I feel is the slightly more of a hero than the others is Diko. ... She is a great asset to the team of historians working on the Columbus project in the Pastwatch observatory because of her curiosity, brilliance, and compassion for the people she observes. ... She is so strong, in fact, that once during her journey to the past when the Columbus project was put into
action, three men armed with spears entered the village she was staying in and “it had taken her about twenty seconds to disarm all three of them, break the spear shafts, and send them staggering away with many cuts and bruises and sore muscles. ... However, in a way Christopher Columbus, or Cristóbal Colón, is the antagonist.
