Pearl Societies ApartAn Essay on the Societies Portrayed

In John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, there are two main cultural
groups : the European settlers and the Mexican-Indians, which are
different in most every way with the way they think of one another, how
they judge, who they respect, and their part in society. ... He decides not to help Kino and his family until after
they get the pearl, and when he finds out nothing seems wrong, he poisons
Coyotito to stage the healing. ... This happens in other
characters as well, so the upper class is mainly portrayed like this in
The Pearl. ... Steinbeck
wants readers to understand the hardship and hate that the
characters from the different societies felt, while calling forth the same
feelings from the readers. He wonderfully created each character to
reflect a certain aspect of their culture and places them cleverly in the
story of the pearl of the world.
