Purpose of the Fool in King Lear

The fool serves as a device in the play to show the imperfections of human nature. The fool was said to be the “all-licensed fool,” since he was paid to say everything he wanted to say. He basically was paid to criticize whatever he wanted to, including the King himself. Though others would usually receive harsh punishments for even trying to insult the king, the fool continued on throughout the play, insulting the King and providing comical relief at times to change the moods of the people.
