Religious Themes in Literature

|
My initial reaction to Flannery O' Connor's The Violent Bear it Away is "Whoa, scary!" The entire book borders on grotesque and is almost inarguably gothic. This chronicle of evil and good battling for the soul of young Tarwater is rife with Biblical and Christian symbolism--bread of life, hats for halos, etc. I found the book to be incredibly disorienting, as the story is not laid out for the reader in a linear fashion, but instead it swirls around jumping from flashbacks to flashforwards to the present.
