In the importance of being Earnest, Jack and Algernon are the main characters, but their interactions between each other may or may not be central to the play. The plot does revolve around them but people like Gwendolyn and Cecilly are vital for the play to properly unravel. ... A typical resolution of a comedy is a Shakespeare play, where everyone is holding hands after a marriage and people thing that life is fine.
At the start of the play, Algernon is with his butler, and the end of the play is set in Jack’s flat. This shows that Jack and Algernon must play a vital role in the play. Also the other characters in the play, for example Gwendolyn relate to them. Jack and Algernon are very close characters and in being in a close relationship their role must be fairly central to the play.
The comical angle of this play revolves around Jack and Algy, for example the Cigarette case prompts Algernon to go on about divorces being made in heaven, and the whole excitement of marriage is uncertainty.
