RPR ON the book Junk by Melvin Burgess

When the teacher told us that we were going to be doing an RPR on a text that appealed to us, I immediately thought of the book “Junk” by Melvin Burgess.I read this book a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed it. ... I think because the book was different to what I would usually read (horror and action books) I enjoyed it more as it was a very realistic story that anyone could relate to. ...
The main characters in the book are Gemma Brogan(14) and David(14) who is mostly called by his nickname Tar which Gemma nicknamed him because he is always on at her for smoking. ... And her desire to be different leads Gemma to Lily and Rob who are self-proclaimed ‘free-spirits’, who introduce the runaways to ‘junk’.
The way that the author Burgess portrays them to the world of drugs is excellent. ... This shows how serious the “Junk” has become to her and how she would do anything to get her fix. ...
At the end of the book there is a chapter that is written by Tar’s dad. ... ”

But just as you thought the book had a Romeo & Juliet feel (Gemma & Tar) you read the last chapter, which is written by Tar. ... Then we see what Lily chooses to do to herself, as she shuns society, and she becomes a repulsive figure, a hag destroyed by the ‘junk. ... By the second half of the book, however, these characters are replaced by Rob, Lily and Sal, the junkies. This alters the tone of the book as when they appear in the book things seem to take a turn for the worse for all the other characters involved with them.
