Raskolnikov’s personal appearance is but one determining factor in whether or not Raskolnikov is the superior intellectual of his “superman” theory. ... Therefore, his great intellect is of no consequence because his perilous financial situation, which diminishes his sanity and thus making him an unfit candidate for being a “superman. ... Raskolnikov’s behavior also reflects the division of his thoughts; part of him believes in the Hegelian ideal of the “superman,” while the other part in under influence of the Neitzchean model. ... Raskolnikov demonstrates a desire to hide every conspicuous detail that there is no evidence of the vague crime he is contemplating, showing his ability to think thoroughly. ... It becomes evident that Raskolnikov is a student, but his endless dwelling on "that" (the unknown crime) reveals a deep thinker, used to unfolding and contemplating the inner philosophies of complex problems. ... At the end of the first chapter, one is allowed at glimpse at the troubles of Raskolnikov’s mind becomes aware that it must be some crime involving the pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna, given Raskolnikovs characterization of this visit as a "trial" and his acute and intense observation of every detail of the visit.
